
SECTIONAL APPENDIX - KETTERING JUNCTION

General

This simulation recreates railway operation at Kettering Junction, on the ex-Midland Railway main line, 70 miles north of London St.Pancras.

Kettering Junction box was built in 1935, to replace two others. It had a 45-lever Tappet frame. Despite its relatively late construction, only oil lamps were provided, and there was no supply of fresh water! The layout and signalling arrangements are based as closely as possible on those in use between 1935 and 1987, when the box was closed and the new Leicester Power Box took over.  
Many trains are crossed over at Kettering Junction between the Main/Fast lines and the Slow/Goods lines. This included express passenger trains to Nottingham via the Manton line, which crossed to the 'Slow' lines at Kettering Junction. South of the junction, the Slow lines continue as the Goods lines. Passenger trains were not permitted to use these.

The adjacent signal boxes are Kettering South (in the Down direction), Burton Latimer (in the Up direction) and Butlin's Sidings on the Branch towards Cambridge. The single-line branch was worked by Electric Tablet.

Kettering station is 1.5 miles north of the junction, with 4 through platforms and a bay platform used mainly by trains to the Branch. Trains stopping at Kettering are indicated by the abbreviation [S] in the Arrival column of the Working Timetable.

Although the simulation differs in a number of details from the original, nothing of great significance has been omitted. 

Sidings
-------

The Down Lie-Bye siding can accommodate up to 50 wagons.

Wrong Direction Movements 
-------------------------

These are not permitted for scheduled passenger and other trains of classes 1,2,3 and 5.

Motive Power and Stock
----------------------

Locomotives are general purpose and interchangeable. Appropriate motive power may be allocated to trains using the Motive Power Manager.
    
Push-pull working is permitted, where trains are so designated. No coupling or uncoupling is permitted for push-pull trains.

For consistency with other PC-RAIL simulations, the classification used by B.R. in recent years has been followed.
