GLASGOW QUEEN STREET

Queen Street High Level, originally the western terminus of the Edinburgh & Glasgow Railway, was opened on 18 February 1842 and is the oldest surviving station within the city boundaries.

This simulation is based upon the current (2009) layout and signalling although the 'Standard' timetable is based upon the Working Timetable for May 1970. Queen Street serves the second busiest inter-city route in Britain. Edinburgh is 47 miles away and since 3rd May 1971 it can be reached in 43 minutes.

The Cowlairs chord has been included for use with modern working timetables. Cowlairs Station has been shown for use in early timetables although this station was closed in 1964 and should not appear in timetables after that date. The full layout including the bay platforms at Springburn has not been shown as these facilities were not used by trains through Cowlairs. As the Cowlairs Chord was not installed until the 1990's any loco hauled trains from Springburn before then have to run round in the Cowlairs loop. Also the sidings adjacent to Platform 1 were removed many years before the Cowlairs Chord was built.

Signals 57, 58, 249, and 250 are automatic but have been made controlled in this simulation in order to make the operation of shunting moves out of Queen Street platforms easier to manage within the constraints of the simulation programme.

RUNNING LINES

Both main lines in and out of Glasgow Queen Street are signalled for bi-directional working.

PLATFORM CAPACITIES

Queen Street platform capacities are as follows:-

Platform                                              No of Coaches

   1	                                                     5
   2	                                                     9
   3	                                                     8
   4	                                                     8
   5	                                                     9
   6	                                                     9
   7	                                                    10

 Other stations capacities are 9 coaches but it should be noted that longer trains are allowed to call at Springburn station

These figures are reduced by 1 for each loco on loco-hauled trains

At Cowlairs Jcn there are passenger and freight stopping points on all lines except the Cowlairs Chord (freight platform) and the Up E&G (timing point). These are approaching the following signals :-
51, 235, 302, 303, 305 and 426

TIMING POINTS

Times displayed for locations other than Queen Street are indicated by a suffix as follows:

A = Ashfield
J = Cowlairs Jcn
S = Springburn
L = Lenzie
Q = Queen St. Sidings
